As another school year approaches, families are busy thinking about backpacks, school supplies, schedules, sports, activities, and everything else that comes with a new year.

But there’s another conversation worth having before the school bell rings:

How are we teaching our children to include others?

At Headwaters Realty Services, we believe that real estate is about more than buying and selling houses. It’s about the communities we call home — and strong communities are built when people feel welcomed, valued, and included.

Every Child Wants to Belong

Children with disabilities are children first.

They want friends.
They want to play.
They want to participate.
They want to be invited.
They want to laugh and make memories.
And most importantly, they want to feel like they belong.

A child may learn differently, communicate differently, move differently, or need additional support to participate in an activity.

That doesn't make them less capable of friendship, joy, or belonging.

Sometimes inclusion simply means making room.

It might mean inviting a child to join a game, giving someone a little extra time, adapting an activity, or choosing patience instead of frustration.

Those seemingly small moments can have a lasting impact.

As parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, neighbors, and community members, we have an opportunity to teach children what inclusion looks like.

We can teach them:

Notice the person who is standing alone.
Invite others to play.
Be patient when someone needs more time.
Celebrate effort, not just winning.
Ask someone how they would like to participate.
Treat people with respect, regardless of their abilities.
Understand that being different isn't the same as being less.

And here's an important reminder:

These lessons aren't just for kids.

Adults are still learning, too.

What Is World Down Syndrome Day?

Every year on March 21, people around the world recognize World Down Syndrome Day.

The date — 3/21 — represents the three copies of chromosome 21 associated with Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21.

World Down Syndrome Day is an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, celebrate the contributions of people with Down syndrome, and promote inclusion.

It’s also a reminder that awareness shouldn't happen only one day a year.

The goal is to build a culture where people with Down syndrome and other disabilities are included throughout the year — at school, at work, in sports, in businesses, and throughout their communities.

Inclusion Belongs Everywhere — Including Here

Think about the places we visit every day.

Schools.
Restaurants.
Parks.
Sports fields.
Libraries.
Local businesses.
Community events.
Workplaces.
Neighborhoods.

These are the places that make a community feel like home.

When people are welcomed into those spaces, everyone benefits.

Inclusion gives children opportunities to build friendships and empathy. It gives adults opportunities to learn from people whose experiences may be different from their own. And it helps create communities where people look out for one another.

That's something worth building.

A Simple Challenge for Families

Before the school year begins, take 10 minutes with your children or grandchildren.

Talk about what it means to include someone.

Ask them:

“What would you do if you saw someone sitting alone at school?”

Then talk about practical ways they could respond.

Maybe they could say hello.

Maybe they could invite that person to join them.

Maybe they could ask a teacher how they can help.

Maybe they could simply sit beside them.

There doesn't have to be a perfect answer.

The important part is starting the conversation.

And Here's the Thing About Home…

When we talk about finding a home, we're really talking about finding a place where life happens.

It's where children grow up.

It's where friendships are made.

It's where neighbors become friends.

It's where families celebrate milestones.

It's where people build memories.

Home isn't just the house. Home is the community around it.
