If you’ve spent much time around Bemidji, Minnesota, you’ve probably heard the phrase “First City on the Mississippi.”
But have you ever stopped to wonder why?
There’s more to the story than a catchy nickname. Bemidji’s connection to the Mississippi River, its lakes, forests and transportation routes helped shape the community we know today.
And for those of us who live and work here, that history is part of what makes Northern Minnesota such a special place to call home.
Where Does the Mississippi River Begin?
The Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca, in Itasca State Park in north-central Minnesota.
From there, the river begins its long journey south through Minnesota and eventually continues through the United States toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Bemidji is located farther downstream along the Mississippi River, where the river flows out of Lake Bemidji.
That makes Bemidji an important early community along the Mississippi—and the source of its familiar title:
The First City on the Mississippi.
Bemidji's Story Goes Back Much Further
The history of this area did not begin with the modern city of Bemidji.
For generations, the lakes, rivers, forests and trails of Northern Minnesota were important to the Ojibwe people. The waterways provided transportation routes through a landscape shaped by thousands of years of natural and cultural history.
Water has always mattered here.
It influenced where people traveled, where communities developed and how people connected with one another.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the timber industry played a major role in the growth of Bemidji and surrounding communities.
Northern Minnesota's vast forests attracted logging operations, workers and businesses. Transportation became increasingly important as the region developed, and the arrival of the railroad helped connect Bemidji with other growing communities.
What developed was more than a logging town.
Bemidji became a regional center for commerce, education, transportation and community life.
